Traditional music from South Africa has achieved an extraordinary international milestone.
Khuzani “Idlamlenze” Mpungose, a celebrated Maskandi artist, was honored as a Cultural Icon in Maskandi Music at the esteemed Nelson Mandela Leadership Awards & Diplomatic Summit 2026.
The prominent event, held at the iconic University of Oxford, gathered visionary leaders from more than 30 countries.
This award acknowledges innovative creators and change-makers who leave a profound mark in their respective communities and nations.
Khuzani was presented with this prestigious honor by the Lord Mayor of Oxford in front of an audience comprising diplomats, notable leaders, and distinguished guests from around the globe.
This occasion signified a significant triumph for traditional South African music, spotlighting the vibrant heritage of Maskandi and Zulu cultural traditions.
In an emotional reflection on the honor, Khuzani expressed the profound importance of the recognition:
“The Nelson Mandela Leadership Awards highlight those making significant contributions to their communities and countries across various sectors. To have my contributions to Maskandi music acknowledged on an international level, and to continue our efforts in elevating our music, heritage, and culture is an incredibly special moment for me.”
Despite this significant achievement, the superstar from Nkandla remained humble, attributing the international acclaim wholly to his vast and dedicated fanbase both in South Africa and worldwide.
“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has continuously supported my music and my journey,” Khuzani remarked.
“Every individual who purchases my music, streams it, shares it, attends my shows, and continues to believe in Maskandi has played a role in this accomplishment. Today, my dedication and the beauty of Maskandi music alongside our Zulu culture have been recognized on an international level in the United Kingdom. This accolade is not just mine; it belongs to everyone who has supported me and helped me bring Maskandi music to the global stage. Ngiyabonga kakhulu.”
From tending cattle in rural KwaZulu-Natal to gracing one of the most renowned academic and cultural platforms worldwide, Khuzani’s significant recognition in Oxford demonstrates that traditional African narratives hold a vital and influential place on the global stage.
