For actress, entrepreneur, and presenter Leandie du Randt, gearing up for the forthcoming season ofTropika Island of Treasureinvolves much more than just enhancing her physical fitness. As she prepares to trade the familiar comforts of home for the demanding conditions on Réunion Island, she’s embracing the journey with a mix of preparation, visualisation, self-awareness, and a healthy understanding that things may not unfold as anticipated.
Recognized for her contagious zest for life, fierce determination, and astute business sense, du Randt is approaching this endeavor holistically, merging intense physical training, deliberate mindset practices, and strategic flexibility developed throughout her 18-year tenure in South Africa’s entertainment sector.
With the eagerly awaited return of the show next month, Leandie reveals her training regimen, how she copes with performance pressures, her vision board for the competition, and her aspirations for both on and off the island.
Tropika Island of Treasure poses a significant mental challenge as well as a physical one. How are you mentally preparing, and what mindset are you entering the competition with?
On a mental level, I am envisioning myself reaching the finale, driving off in the Suzuki Jimny while celebrating afterwards. I’ve even put together a vision board for that! I wholeheartedly believe in the power of thinking, speaking, and feeling what you desire as if it’s already occurred. Simultaneously, mental resilience involves being at peace with every possible outcome. What if I leave the competition first? Life continues, and we learn and adapt. I realize that when you have a backup plan for the worst-case scenario, it alleviates fear and empowers you to perform at your highest level.
Are you adjusting your physical preparation ahead of the competition? Any particular training, nutrition, or fitness regimens to ensure your body is primed?
In terms of physical preparation, I have considerably increased my regimen’s consistency. I’m now working out five to seven times a week, even squeezing in sessions while traveling for work or enjoying a holiday, which is something I rarely did before! I’ve incorporated specific strength training into my regimen and compelled myself to engage in more cardio, even though it’s something I typically dislike!
What do you predict will be your most significant personal challenge on the island?
My biggest personal challenge will likely be handling performance anxiety. It’s that same rush of adrenaline and nerves that you experience just before a major sports event or competition at school. Transforming that anxious energy into concentrated focus will be crucial.
You’re characterized by your determination and competitiveness, yet Tropika Island of Treasure also demands close cooperation. What type of teammate do you envision being?
The kind of teammate I turn out to be will depend on my partner, but adaptability and honesty are fundamental traits of mine. Pursuing a degree in BComm Industrial Psychology provided me with substantial knowledge about human behavior, personality assessments, and teamwork. This background has equipped me to quickly assess individuals and tailor my approach to enhance my partner’s strengths. Regardless of who I’m teamed with, I am committed to giving my utmost!
How are you bracing for the unforeseen? The island, challenges, and pressure can present contestants with unexpected scenarios. Are you someone who flourishes when faced with deviations from the plan?
I over-prepare intentionally to maintain my adaptability. While it may seem contradictory, after 18 years in an entertainment sector known for its volatility, I’ve discovered that comprehensive preparation is what enables you to adjust smoothly when hurdles arise. I consistently approach situations with a Plan A, B, and C for various potential scenarios. Early in my career, I struggled tremendously when things didn’t go accordingly. However, the most valuable lesson I’ve acquired is that flexibility is essential for survival. If you fail to adapt, you will not succeed.
You’re traveling to Réunion Island for the competition. What are you most eager to experience beyond the actual challenges?
I am absolutely thrilled! My partner and I have always wished to explore Réunion Island to indulge in its wonderful culture, cuisine, and breathtaking landscape. Now, through Tropika Island of Treasure, I have the opportunity to discover it for work alongside a fantastic group of individuals. I’m excited to soak it all in.
If you could return from Tropika Island of Treasure having accomplished just one thing, be it winning, discovering something about yourself, creating memories, or challenging yourself beyond your comfort zone, what would that be?
Winning would be amazing, however, my vision board also states that I want to return as a more fulfilled and self-aware individual. At 38 years old, I see this experience as a springboard into my next decade, cultivating a deeper comfort in who I am and fully embracing my true self. Alongside my personal growth, my ultimate aspiration is for this journey to be transformative for my teammate as well, unlocking new opportunities and blessings for their future.
With her training intensified, her mindset oriented towards flexibility, and a vision board to guide her aspirations, Leandie du Randt is prepared to step out of her comfort zone and embrace whatever adventure awaits her on Tropika Island of Treasure.
The 12th season of Tropika Island of Treasure is set to premiere on Wednesdays starting from 23 September at 21:00 on SABC 1, with a repeat airing every Thursday from 24 September at 18:00 on S3.
