Madlanga Commission Reopens: Fadiel Adams Takes the Stand

Madlanga Commission Resumes: Fadiel Adams Testifies

PRETORIA, 9 August 2026 – The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will not conduct public hearings this Sunday or Monday, with sessions scheduled to resume at 09:30 on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.

Fadiel Adams, the leader of the National Coloured Congress and a Member of Parliament, is anticipated to testify when the inquiry reconvenes at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria.

Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels has confirmed that Adams will appear on 11 August, a detail which was also highlighted by SABC News on Friday.

Adams expected to face questions over IDAC affidavit

During his testimony, Adams is likely to address issues linked to a Section 27 affidavit that was part of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption’s probe into senior officials within Crime Intelligence.

Evidence submitted to the Commission has suggested that Adams’s affidavit identified three high-ranking police officials for investigation concerning allegations of fraud and corruption.

Additionally, a later Section 28 document provided to prosecutors reportedly included eight more names. Evidence presented has connected these additional names to senior IDAC investigator Dylan Perumal.

These discrepancies between the affidavits have drawn significant scrutiny as the Commission examines the inception, expansion, and management of the IDAC investigation.

The inquiry has also reviewed testimonies concerning sensitive Crime Intelligence documents that were said to have been delivered anonymously to Adams’s office. Adams claims he did not have prior knowledge of their presence and has acted in the public interest by passing on the information for further investigation.

Former IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson, among others, has already undergone extensive questioning regarding how the affidavit was managed and the subsequent investigation.

Adams given opportunity to respond

Adams was previously served with a Rule 3 notice, which notifies individuals that evidence before the Commission could implicate or adversely reflect on them.

His forthcoming appearance will allow him to formally respond to the allegations and evidence currently presented to the inquiry.

The Commission is investigating claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi regarding corruption, political interference, and the purported infiltration of South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Why Adams’s testimony matters

Adams steps into the witness box following weeks of testimony focused on IDAC, Crime Intelligence probes, and politically sensitive policing issues.

His statements could aid the Commission in understanding how the contested documents were acquired, the rationale behind the complaint submitted to IDAC, and the reasons for any expansion of the investigation beyond the initial information he provided.

This may also provide clarity on the inconsistencies between Adams’s original affidavit and later documents that were used to identify additional officials as potential suspects.

The allegations being scrutinized have not yet been substantiated, and the Commission has yet to reach any definitive conclusions regarding Adams or the other officials involved in the testimony.

Proceedings are set to continue at 09:30 on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.
