Malawi’s Struggle: 10,000 Citizens Seek Home as Repatriation Crisis Declared National Disaster

Malawi's Repatriation Emergency: 10,000 Citizens Displaced in National Disaster

The government of Malawi has officially classified the situation of around 10,000 citizens stranded in South Africa as a national disaster, reflecting the escalating humanitarian crisis amid rising anti-immigration sentiments in the region.

In an urgent call for help, officials in Lilongwe reached out to development partners, businesses, humanitarian organizations, faith-based groups, and transport providers to participate in a national initiative aimed at ensuring the safe return of vulnerable Malawians.

This declaration emerges as many Malawian nationals deal with ongoing unrest, with numerous individuals congregating at Sherwood Town Hall in KwaZulu-Natal as they seek aid and repatriation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Malawi, in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, released a statement acknowledging the limitations of government resources in addressing this pressing crisis.

Officials remarked that the extensive scale of the situation has strained available resources, leading to a call for urgent support from both domestic and international partners.

The government characterized the repatriation initiative as a national humanitarian mission that necessitates wide-ranging collaboration to ensure the safe return of those affected.

Despite facing financial obstacles, efforts for repatriation have commenced.

The first group of Malawians was successfully returned to their home country, arriving safely on 9 June 2026.

As the situation escalated, Malawi dispatched a specialized task force to South Africa on 13 June. This team has been engaged in tasks related to registration, verification, protection, and repatriation of impacted citizens.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Monday, 15 June, eight buses transporting 645 Malawian nationals left South Africa under a voluntary repatriation program.

This group is anticipated to reach Kazungu Stadium on Wednesday, 17 June, where health assessments and other necessary evaluations will take place before they return to their communities.

Although hundreds are on their way home, many thousands are still in need of assistance.

The Malawian government has yet to reveal the total amount of financial support or donations received in response to its call for aid.

Officials are actively coordinating ground efforts as concerns intensify about the well-being of citizens affected by the backlash from anti-immigration protests and the escalating tensions in parts of South Africa.

These events arise as South Africa heightens its immigration enforcement measures.

The Department of Home Affairs recently disclosed that 2,745 foreign nationals were repatriated in June, illustrating the broader challenges faced by immigration authorities and migrant communities throughout the country.

For Malawi, however, the priority remains the safe return of thousands of citizens who find themselves at the heart of one of the most significant humanitarian repatriation efforts in recent years.

As buses depart South Africa with families seeking safety and stability, the scale of the issues confronting both governments is becoming increasingly apparent. For many returning individuals, the journey back home signifies not just an escape from uncertainty but also the prospect of rebuilding their lives after weeks of fear and turmoil.
