Much was covered in the aftermath of Nigeria’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Russia, but the introduction of Osayande Peter Edokpolor was a definite highlight from the friendly match.

The 19-year-old forward from Benfica’s U20 team made his debut for the senior national team in the 70th minute and showcased his talent just eight minutes later.
Edokpolor scored in the 78th minute, providing the Super Eagles with a boost as they sought to recover from a two-goal deficit. The comeback was completed by Akor Adams, who scored an equalizer during stoppage time.
For us at Softfootball, it is encouraging to see how Edokpolor took initiative in the final third.
He didn’t hesitate to take a shot when an opportunity arose. Although his attempt may have deflected off a defender, the important part was that he made the decision to shoot.
This approach could be beneficial to Nigeria.
The Super Eagles have, at times, featured players hesitant to take shots until they are close to the keeper. There are instances when promising attacks end without any shots on goal. Edokpolor demonstrated a different mindset: spot the chance, take it, and create an opportunity.
While one match and one goal do not allow for sweeping assessments about a young player, there remains much for the Benfica talent to learn, especially as he adapts to senior international competitions.
However, his debut gave an optimistic view of his potential contributions.
His direct style, eagerness to shoot, and instinct for attack are traits worth observing as he continues to develop.
At just 19, Edokpolor has ample time ahead of him. If he stays dedicated to improvement, keeps up his consistency, and avoids major injuries, he could become an asset for Nigeria at the senior level.
Moving forward, his main focus should be on advancing with Benfica and the Nigeria U23 team. While his debut and goal against Russia set a solid foundation, the challenge lies in converting this promising start into sustained growth.
