After an impressive six-year tenure marked by goals, trophies, and record-setting achievements, Peter Shalulile has disclosed his reasons for departing from Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Namibian forward, recognized as one of the standout strikers in South African football, has expressed that his choice was fueled by a singular aim: to regain regular playing time.
Shalulile’s exit signifies the conclusion of a remarkable phase at Chloorkop, where he became a beloved figure and a crucial performer for the club. Despite his accolades and personal achievements, the 32-year-old felt the time was right to pursue new challenges.
Since joining Sundowns from Highlands Park in 2020, Shalulile has made a lasting impact, concluding his run with 228 appearances, 107 goals, and 27 assists across competitions.
In his reflections, Shalulile characterized his experience at the club as a pivotal chapter in his career.
“The journey has been great. It’s been amazing,” said Shalulile.
“Coming to a club where there are top players, it’s difficult but with hard work, listening and dedication, I’ve managed to achieve a number of records and win trophies, including the league, MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.”
Beneath the celebrations lay challenges that tested his determination.
Shalulile acknowledged that injuries had at times interrupted his progress and that scoring became challenging. Rather than let these difficulties define him, he concentrated on personal development.
“There was a time when injuries came, and more importantly, when the goals stopped coming,” he said.
“That was the time I needed to dig deep within myself. Regardless of not scoring, I still went to the gym and continued with my finishing drills.”
As competition increased for positions at Sundowns, Shalulile began to contemplate his future with his agents. These discussions ultimately led him to make a tough request to the club’s management.
“I decided that the best thing for me was to ask the club and the president to give me an opportunity to showcase my talent somewhere else.”
While his departure wraps up a significant era, Shalulile emphasized that there are no hard feelings towards the Betway Premiership champions.
He expressed appreciation for everyone involved in his successful time at the club, from fans to management.
“Thank you to the supporters. They have been amazing, always singing and giving us energy.”
“I’d also like to thank the chairman, the president and everyone who brought me to Sundowns. I appreciate everything they have done for me.”
His farewell message hinted at the possibility of a future return.
“It’s not a goodbye. You never know where I’ll end up. Life is unpredictable, and I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.”
Although the specifics of his next move are not confirmed, Shalulile has generated considerable interest. He has been associated with a potential transfer to Zimbabwe’s Scotland FC, along with speculation linking him to Orlando Pirates.
Regardless of where he heads next, one aspect remains clear. Peter Shalulile departs Mamelodi Sundowns not out of dwindling ambition, but in pursuit of more football, additional goals, and another chapter to unfold.
