On Thursday, the Premier Soccer League announced that a moment of silence will take place at every Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship match starting tonight and continuing through the weekend, in response to the troubling trend of femicide and the recent murders of women in Ekurhuleni.
Authorities have confirmed that a ninth body was located on Thursday in Dawn Park, Boksburg, marking the total number of female victims found in the Ekurhuleni area east of Johannesburg since mid-July.
Many of the victims were discovered either naked or with their clothing partially removed. One victim identified was 38-year-old Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, who went missing while jogging and was later found deceased.
These discoveries have led to memorials, silent protests, and a surge of national outrage regarding violence against women. The league expressed its solidarity with the nation in mourning.
“The Premier Soccer League (PSL) joins the nation in mourning the victims of femicide and the recent spate of violent killings,” the PSL stated.
“The PSL extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who have lost their lives during this difficult and painful time.
“We are deeply saddened by the violent crimes that have been reported in recent times, as well as those that may have gone unreported, and hope that justice will be served.
“A moment of silence will be observed in their honour at all Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship matches starting tonight and throughout the weekend.
“May their souls repose peacefully.”
Stadiums across the top two divisions will observe a period of silence before the matches as players, officials, and fans honor those who have lost their lives.
