Rameez Patel’s Life Sentence Upheld by Supreme Court of Appeal

Supreme Court Confirms Rameez Patel's Life Sentence

BLOEMFONTEIN: Rameez Patel, a former businessman from Polokwane, has faced another setback in his legal journey as the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) rejected his bid to appeal his conviction and life sentence for murdering his wife, Fatima Patel.

The SCA’s ruling effectively ends another chapter in Patel’s protracted legal struggle to overturn the verdict that led to his life imprisonment, which included further sentences for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Patel’s appeal followed a rejection from the Polokwane High Court regarding his previous efforts to challenge the trial’s outcome. He submitted his application for leave to appeal on May 12, 2026, aiming to contest the verdict issued on December 19, 2025.

However, Justices Keightly JA and Windell AJA concluded that Patel did not present any reasonable likelihood of success or sufficient justification for his appeal to proceed.

The SCA’s dismissal of his application confirms that Patel’s challenge against both his conviction and sentence cannot move forward.

This recent decision is not Patel’s first failure in contesting the court’s determinations. On April 16, 2026, the Limpopo High Court denied his appeal for his conviction and life sentence. Following that, Patel’s legal representatives sought recourse from the SCA, which has now proven unsuccessful.

This extended legal conflict traces back to April 2015, when Fatima Patel was discovered dead in the couple’s Polokwane apartment in Nirvana.

Patel was apprehended on April 13, 2015, just days after his wife’s demise.

He was initially charged with murder and the obstruction of justice, with accusations that he had manipulated the crime scene and misled law enforcement.

Subsequently, he faced additional allegations regarding illegal firearm and ammunition possession.

During court proceedings, the prosecution asserted that Patel had fatally shot his wife on April 10, 2015, amid ongoing marital strife reportedly tied to his extramarital affairs.

Patel contended he was innocent, claiming that unidentified intruders had invaded their home and killed her.

However, prosecutors were able to bring forth forensic evidence that contradicted Patel’s account of the events.

Beginning in 2016, the trial spanned several years before concluding in November 2025 with Patel’s conviction.

This verdict wrapped up one of Limpopo’s most highly publicized murder cases, although Patel’s legal battles continued with multiple appeals.

Now that the SCA has declined to consider Patel’s appeal, he remains incarcerated, serving his life sentence for the murder of his wife.

This ruling marks another pivotal moment in a case that has captivated public attention for over ten years.
