Toss: “I’m A Rapper On The Core.” Toss has shared insights regarding the creative thought process behind his collaboration with Nadia Nakai on their joint EP, Do’s & Don’ts, emphasizing that merging Amapiano and hip-hop was a straightforward choice for him.
Toss: “I’m A Rapper On The Core”In a conversation with SA Hip Hop Mag, the Amapiano artist was inquired about any reservations he might have had regarding the fusion of his piano-inflected sound with Nadia Nakai’s hip-hop style. Toss swiftly negated the notion, citing his background as a rapper.
“Not really. I have a history in hip-hop. I’m a rapper, funny enough. I’m really a rapper on the core, so it wasn’t a hard decision to make,” Toss explained.
His remarks underscored an aspect of his artistry that may be overlooked due to his prominence in Amapiano. Although he has carved out a significant reputation in the genre, Toss emphasized that hip-hop continues to hold a vital position in his musical persona.
Nadia’s artistic contribution also significantly influenced Toss’s decision to collaborate. He expressed confidence in her abilities and viewed the project as a means to expand his creative horizons.
“I know Braga is dope and that her creativity is crazy, honestly out of this world. I knew working with her would push me,” he remarked.
Instead of perceiving the differences in their musical backgrounds as a hurdle, Toss regarded them as part of the project’s allure. For him, exploring a new creative realm was precisely what made this collaboration worthwhile. “It was a challenge, and I love challenges. I love challenging myself to show up and rise to the occasion,” he noted.
This mindset became pivotal for Do’s & Don’ts, a collaborative effort showcasing two distinct musical identities. Toss brings his Amapiano expertise and rap foundation, while Nadia contributes her well-established hip-hop experience.
Their partnership is indicative of the increasingly dynamic landscape of South African music, where artists transition across genres and explore new connections between their sounds. For Toss, collaborating with Nadia was not merely about adhering to familiar genres but about uncovering the potential outcomes of pushing his creative limits.
