Louisa Zondo, author and activist, has converted her personal sorrow into a hopeful legacy by establishing a memorial forest at Rustlers Valley Regenerative Farm located in the eastern Free State.

In honor of what would have marked Riky Rick’s 39th birthday, Zondo collaborated with her partner Kumi Naidoo and the Riky Rick Foundation to organize a weekend centered around remembrance, healing, and renewal.

Throughout the festivities, a total of 150 trees were planted to coincide with several significant occasions, such as Nelson Mandela International Day—also Zondo and Naidoo’s wedding anniversary—the 97th birthday of Riky’s grandmother, Maemu, and Riky’s birthday in spirit on July 20.

In an interview with TshisaLIVE, Zondo shared her thoughts on the day’s emotional resonance and the memories that influence her path as a mother.

“Yesterday was a special day. It is a day when I am reminded of the fact that Rikhado came to Earth on this day. I have a whole lot of memories, from his childhood to his growing years. The gift that being a mother is, the lessons of being a mother. This year was filled with blessings and special moments.”

The memorial forest symbolizes more than just a remembrance for Zondo. It represents the principles Riky Rick advocated for during his lifetime. A celebrated figure not only for hits like Stay Shining but also for his role in shaping youth culture and style, the rapper fostered environments where young people felt they could belong and be motivated.

“He helped young people find their belonging. This is creating space for our continued healing. This becomes a space where we remember many we want to keep alive who have passed on,” she explained.

This initiative also emphasizes the strong ties between nature and healing. According to Zondo, the forest serves as a reminder that life persists in various forms and that love transcends mortality.

“The environment is based on the principles of us remembering we are part of nature. The trees are such a powerful reminder of how nature connects and nothing really dies.”

Instead of letting grief overshadow the occasion, she embraced it with a sense of gratitude and optimism.

“Love is the predominant energy I am holding onto on this day,” she remarked.

The memorial site remains open to the public for those who wish to plant trees in memory of their loved ones, establishing a living sanctuary that intertwines remembrance with renewal.

Zondo addressed concerns raised by those questioning the family’s decision to publicly honor Riky Rick instead of allowing him to “rest.” She stated unequivocally that love is the reason his memory endures.

“I believe the day loved ones stop loving those who are no longer walking with them on this realm, that’s the day they die. It’s love which keeps people alive, whether they are a celebrity or not. It is love that keeps us growing through the pain of loss and opens up space for something else.”

While she recognizes that grief never fully dissipates, she spoke about finding ways to appreciate each emotion.

“There is no negating the pain when it’s there,” she said, conveying that such moments are often accompanied by “deep gratitude surges, sometimes with tears but also deep smiles of the heart.”

Kumi Naidoo, who played a fatherly role in Riky Rick’s life, also commemorated the rapper’s legacy by recalling one of their last conversations before his untimely death. He remembered Riky candidly discussing the pressures of being regarded as a role model while privately dealing with his own challenges and the loss of friends.

“I can’t help but think if he was around how much more of an impact he would have had,” Naidoo contemplated.

Through the efforts of the Riky Rick Foundation and initiatives like the memorial forest, Louisa Zondo continues to promote her son’s vision of compassion, creativity, and mental health awareness.

The site established in the Free State is not merely a collection of trees but a living homage to a son whose reach continues to extend, providing a space for healing and reminding visitors that even amid great loss, new beginnings are possible.
