Robot Boii Faces Backlash for Skhothane-Inspired Show at Paris Fashion Week

Robot Boii Sparks Controversy with Skhothane-Themed Showcase at Paris Fashion Week
South African performer Robot Boii gained significant attention online following his participation in Paris Fashion Week.He played an integral role during the presentation of the latest collection by MaXhosa Africa, a brand established by designer Laduma Ngxokolo.

The brand showcased its Autumn/Winter 2026 collection in Paris, emphasizing the combination of dance and cultural themes in its runway event.

During the display, Robot Boii and his fellow dancers performed a routine that drew inspiration from the Skhothane subculture.

A video clip of the performance surfaced online, illustrating the dancers pouring custard onto a carpet amidst their lively choreography. The act references Skhothane, a culture known for extravagant fashion and the symbolic act of drenching luxury goods with custard.

This footage, shared on X, attracted swift criticism from viewers who believed it misrepresented the culture.

Although the performance aimed to honor South African culture on a global platform, several social media users expressed dissatisfaction with the portrayal.

One viewer commented: “If real Skhotanes aren’t there feels like a bastardisation of the culture, and of course, Robot Boii is always at the scene of the crime.”

Another individual voiced doubt regarding the designer’s endorsement of the act, stating: “I’ve modelled for @MaXhosaAfrica. I refuse to believe Laduma would agree to this, on set he is so strict about how his garments are represented, to do this at PFW.”

A third commenter proposed an alternate way to showcase the culture, remarking: “If you’re gonna pay homage to the skhothane culture, at least invite someone like Material Don Dada, not Robot Boii (respectfully).”
