Springboks Begin 2025 Season Strong with 42-24 Win Over Italy, Kriel Shines

Last Saturday evening at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, South Africa kicked off the 2025 international rugby season with a strong showing, defeating Italy 42-24. The Springboks, led by their new captain Jesse Kriel, celebrated his leadership by scoring the first try. They dominated the first half 28-3 but allowed Italy to mount a comeback in the second half. Scrumhalf Morne van den Berg shone by scoring two tries, raising concerns for coach Rassie Erasmus about the bench’s performance ahead of their rematch next Saturday in Gqeberha.

Springboks’ Dominant Start to 2025 Season

The Springboks began their 2025 international season with confidence, defeating Italy 42-24 at Loftus Versfeld. Center Jesse Kriel led the team as the newly appointed captain.

Jesse Kriel marked his captaincy with a try, helping the Springboks dominate the first half. They led 28-3 at the break, showcasing their strength in the opening stages.

Scrumhalf Morne van den Berg also shone, scoring two tries. Coach Rassie Erasmus praised the team’s first-half performance, stating, “We displayed excellent form but need to stay focused throughout the match.”

Areas for Improvement Ahead of Next Match

Despite the win, concerns arose over the Springboks’ second-half performance. They allowed Italy to score three tries, highlighting a vulnerability that needs addressing.

The bench players had limited impact on the game, which could pose challenges in future matches. Erasmus acknowledged these issues, indicating both depth and strategy will require review.

The Springboks are scheduled to face Italy again next Saturday in Gqeberha. Kriel noted the importance of maintaining intensity, asserting, “We must learn from this and be ready for the rematch.”

The Springboks, under new captain Jesse Kriel, kicked off the 2025 season with a solid 42-24 win against Italy. However, their second-half performance raised questions for coach Rassie Erasmus to consider ahead of their upcoming rematch.
