Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba presented the laboratory findings related to the funeral food sample to the Ga-Maja community during a meeting at the Traditional Tribal Office on Wednesday afternoon (20 May 2026).

This announcement follows a tragic incident on 18 April 2026, when six individuals, including a seven-year-old child, died after eating food prepared for a funeral gathering.
Reportedly, between 18 and 20 April 2026, more than 120 attendees experienced severe symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea after consuming the meal.
Local authorities noted that over 70 individuals required hospitalization in Lebowakgomo following the event.
According to Premier Ramathuba, a toxicology assessment conducted on 14 May 2026 showed no signs of poison, chemicals, or drugs in the tested food sample.
“At this stage, the findings therefore do not support allegations that poison was present in the specimens examined,” stated the provincial Premier.
As the provincial government awaits histology reports, community members are advised to prioritize hygiene when preparing food and to refrain from sharing unverified information on social platforms.
The Premier assured the traditional council of ongoing communication regarding subsequent reports as they emerge.
