Scorpion Smuggling Bust: Cape Town Airport Seizes 150 Venomous Creatures

Capers at Cape Town Airport: 150 Venomous Scorpions Snared in Smuggling Operation

Suspect detained following intelligence-led operation at Cape Town International Airport

A typical day at Cape Town International Airport turned unusual when authorities discovered 150 live venomous scorpions nestled within a traveler’s baggage, resulting in the arrest of a 28-year-old individual.

The arrest was part of an intelligence-gathering operation conducted by the Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit alongside CapeNature on Friday, 12 June 2026.

Police acted on tips suggesting that a person at the airport had scorpions in their possession. Officers swiftly obtained a description of the individual and initiated a focused operation to track him down.

Authorities reported that the suspect was identified and taken into custody at the airport before he could depart.

Dangerous creatures found among personal items

In a follow-up search of the suspect’s luggage, authorities made a shocking discovery.

A total of 150 live venomous scorpions were located hidden among various clothing items in his bags. The scorpions were carefully extracted and secured by officials.

The suspect faces charges under the Nature and Environmental Conservation Ordinance for allegedly possessing protected wildlife.

The precise valuation of the scorpions remains unknown; however, experts in wildlife trafficking caution that rare and venomous species can fetch high prices in the illegal exotic animal trade.

Scorpions relocated to a safe facility

After the seizure, the scorpions were relocated to a secure facility designed to ensure their safety.

Authorities have yet to reveal the specific species involved or confirm whether the animals were intended for local sale or international trafficking.

This incident underscores persistent concerns about wildlife trafficking through major transportation hubs and the escalating challenges faced by conservationists and law enforcement in addressing these crimes.

Court appearance set

The arrested 28-year-old individual is scheduled to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 June 2026.

Investigations by the police are still ongoing.
