Subrayen made his ODI debut against Australia on Tuesday in only his second international match.
South African spin bowler Prenelan Subrayen is facing a potential suspension early in his international career after match officials reported concerns regarding his “suspect bowling action” during the team’s current tour of Australia.
In his inaugural one-day international (ODI) match, Subrayen recorded figures of 1/46, contributing to South Africa’s 98-run win over Australia in Cairns on Tuesday.
However, following the match, it emerged on Wednesday that officials had raised questions about the legality of his bowling action.
According to International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations: “An illegal bowling action is where a player is throwing rather than bowling the ball. This is defined by the ICC as being where the player’s elbow extends by an amount of more than 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the ball being released.”
Evaluation of Bowling Action
In accordance with ICC guidelines, Subrayen is required to undergo an independent assessment of his bowling action at an ICC accredited testing facility. This process will utilize advanced technology and be overseen by specialists in human movement science to ascertain the legality of his technique.
The outcome of this assessment will determine whether he can continue playing at the elite level or if he will be suspended until he adjusts his action and passes a subsequent test.
At 31, Subrayen is an experienced player in domestic cricket, having claimed over 400 wickets in 302 professional matches across all formats.
His first chance at the international stage arose during the Test series against Zimbabwe last month, and he made his debut in limited overs cricket with the Proteas earlier this week.
With upcoming ODI matches against Australia scheduled in Mackay on Friday and Sunday, it remains uncertain when Subrayen will be eligible to return to play, which would temporarily leave the national squad at 15 players.
