Suspect Detained as Police Seize Over 258kg of Cannabis in Sekhukhune Toyota Hilux Bust

Major Drug Bust: Police Capture Suspect and Confiscate 258kg of Cannabis in Sekhukhune

Major Drug Bust as Police Seize Dagga Worth Over R500,000

On Wednesday, a regular trip through the Sekhukhune area took a sudden turn when law enforcement intercepted a vehicle reportedly carrying over 250 kilograms of dagga. This operation resulted in the arrest of a 44-year-old man and the confiscation of drugs valued at more than R500,000.

The operation began after police obtained information regarding a vehicle thought to be transporting illegal substances into the region. Acting on this intelligence, officers moved in to halt the vehicle before it could proceed.

Tip-Off Leads Police to Suspect Vehicle

Officials stated that a silver-grey Toyota Hilux bakkie matching the description given in the tip-off was located.

The vehicle was detected in Steelbridge at Ga-Malekana village as it entered the Sekhukhune police jurisdiction.

Officers stopped the bakkie and searched it after the driver consented to the inspection.

What they found would escalate the situation into a major drug bust.

Hundreds of Kilograms of Dagga Found

During the search, authorities discovered a considerable amount of dagga packed in black plastic bags within the vehicle.

The driver failed to offer a reasonable explanation about the drugs’ source.

He was taken into custody on-site and charged with possession of dagga.

Police confirmed that the total weight of the confiscated dagga was approximately 258.251 kilograms.

The entire batch was taken as evidence.

Court Appearance Expected

The arrested man is scheduled to appear before the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 18 June 2026.

He will face charges associated with the possession of dagga.

This arrest is part of a broader strategy by law enforcement to disrupt the trafficking of illegal drugs in Limpopo, aiming to hinder criminal networks from utilizing the province for transport.

Police Commissioner Praises Officers

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed her appreciation for the officers involved, calling the operation a significant message to those engaged in the illegal drug trade.

“This interception sends a clear message that Sekhukhune District is not a transit route for drugs. We urge members of the community to continue sharing information with the police so that we can rid our streets of illicit substances and put behind bars those who profit from these drugs,” she said.

Investigations Continue

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing as they seek to uncover the complete circumstances surrounding this drug seizure.

This recent arrest underscores the ongoing need for community cooperation and intelligence-driven policing in addressing drug-related crime throughout Limpopo.

Currently, a Toyota Hilux halted on a rural road in Sekhukhune serves as a reminder from law enforcement: efforts are intensifying against those attempting to transport illegal drugs in the province.
