JOHANNESBURG: Musician Teddy James from Johannesburg is reflecting on his fortunes as he prepares to expand his reach with his new single, Blessed.
Launched on 1 October via Tony Duardo Presents, this melodic piece serves as a meditation on faith, family, love, and gratitude, marking what Teddy identifies as a new phase in his artistic journey.
“Every day I walk, I’m blessed. Every morning I wake up, I’m blessed,” he says.
For Teddy, the notion of being blessed transcends fame and material possessions; it revolves around valuing life’s simple joys.
“If I can wake up, have somewhere safe to sleep and have a meal in front of me, that is already a win,” he says.
His musical journey started when he was just eight years old, having recorded a song for his mother’s 50th birthday. That initial foray into a recording studio ignited a passion that has continuously influenced his life.
Teddy shares that he has developed greater confidence in his identity as a musician.
“My earlier music was me figuring myself out. Now I’m much more comfortable being Teddy James,” he says.
His inspirations in music include Drake, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole, all of whom he respects for their versatility, longevity, and enduring appeal.
Teddy emphasizes his desire to craft music that transcends passing trends.
“I’m not interested in making disposable music. I’m trying to build records that live longer than the moment they were released in,” he says.
The Johannesburg-based artist is currently working on an EP that will highlight his versatility, production talents, and innovative use of samples. Additionally, he is developing a larger project titled The Parks.
While striving for mainstream success, Teddy asserts that he will not compromise his true self in the quest.
“I genuinely believe in my talent. Vocally, creatively, and in terms of versatility, I genuinely believe I can compete at the highest level,” he says.
At present, Blessed represents a tribute to the journey he has undertaken thus far and an affirmation of what Teddy James envisions for the future.
“I woke up. I got another day. That’s a blessing.”
