Thobani Dlomo Nzuza Makes His Theatre Comeback After Seven-Year Hiatus

Thobani Dlomo Nzuza Returns to the Stage After a Seven-Year Break

In a significant move, South African actor Thobani Dlomo Nzuza is returning to the theatre stage after a seven-year absence from that realm, announcing his re-entry with an impactful production.

On Instagram, the versatile artist shared an emotional message reflecting on his career path and how he began in theatre, underscoring its importance in his journey.

“After 7 years on television… I am finally coming back to the stage. Theatre is where it all began for me,” he wrote.

Nzuza revisited his modest beginnings in 2016 and 2017 when he journeyed across South Africa, performing in a play driven by passion and resolve.

“I had no institutional support, no big sponsors, only faith, courage, and people who believed in me when I was still a nobody,” he explained.

He also acknowledged the contributions of individuals who supported him during those formative years, particularly Reggie Mampensela Ndlovu, who assisted him in securing an audition at the Zabalaza Theatre Festival, and Menzi Mkhwane, who mobilized support on social media to help fund his travel to Cape Town.

That backing led to significant accomplishments at the festival.

“Because of that love and support… we went to the festival and won Best Production and Best Actor. Those moments changed my life,” he noted.

Years on, he asserts that his enthusiasm for storytelling remains robust as he gears up for his return to the stage—this time, as a performer who deeply appreciates his journey.

The play he is starring in is the acclaimed production Boy Ntulikazi, organized by Ubutainment Arts.

This production has seen considerable success and is even included in educational curricula as a published book.

Written by Thobani Nzuza and Kagiso Tshimakwane, the play will feature Nzuza performing alongside music composed by Hloniphani Mthethwa.

Scheduled for 1 to 3 May 2026, the production will be hosted at Seabrooke’s Theatre at Durban High School.

Inviting audiences to join the experience, Nzuza characterized the upcoming performances as a tribute to dreams, resilience, and the importance of community support.

“If you have ever believed in a dream… if you have ever supported a young artist… if you have ever loved theatre… this one is for you,” he expressed.
