In a recent interview snippet shared by Fabrizio Romano on his official X account, João Cancelo acknowledged that he joined FC Barcelona out of shape following his stint in Saudi Arabia. He credited the rigorous training techniques of head coach Hansi Flick for helping him improve his fitness levels.
The Portuguese player noted that Flick’s high-energy training sessions have played a key role in regaining his sharpness and self-assurance on the field.
Romano reported:
João Cancelo: “I wasn’t in my best shape when I joined Barça from Al Hilal, I was not at the same physical level as my teammates”. “I’m returning to my level now, step by step. Flick is very demanding, the club as well… I love that”.
Softfootball previously reported that João Cancelo officially rejoined FC Barcelona on a season-long loan from Al-Hilal SFC, marking his second tenure with the club following his previous 2023–24 season. The transfer in January 2026 faced minor documentation delays before being completed, allowing him to return until the conclusion of the 2025–26 season.

Reports earlier confirmed that Barcelona secured a complete agreement with Al Hilal regarding the temporary transfer, bolstering the team’s defensive capabilities for the upcoming season.
In related news, João Neves has finalized a long-term contract with Paris Saint-Germain F.C., extending his tenure until June 2030 with a new salary arrangement.
