Tribute to Fallen Anti-Gang Hero: Constable Laid to Rest in Limpopo After Tragic Ambush

Honoring a Hero: Constable Remembered After Tragic Ambush in Limpopo

The grief of losing a young police officer in the line of duty has resurfaced at his family residence in Limpopo, where 29-year-old Constable Thapelo Kleinbooi Tlometsane is being honored after the tragic ambush that led to his death in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni.

Tlometsane, who served with the Gauteng Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, was fatally shot on Friday, 7 August 2026, along with his partner, Constable Siphiwe Sibeko, as they responded to reports of gunfire during their patrol.

Instead of seeking refuge, they headed straight into danger.

The officers faced intense gunfire in Reiger Park, resulting in both sustaining fatal injuries. Additionally, two civilians lost their lives in the incident.

On Sunday, Tlometsane’s family, colleagues, community members, and high-ranking police officials convened at his family home in Gedroogde village, Zebediela, near Polokwane, to conduct his official funeral.

Attendees included Deputy Police Minister Dr. Polly Boshielo and Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane.

For Tlometsane’s relatives, the funeral goes beyond commemorating a police officer slain while on duty. It represents saying farewell to a young man characterized by those who knew him as someone who avoided the limelight.

His brother, David, described him as a reserved and devoted individual who shunned attention.

However, his dedication to service was unmistakable.

The loss has created a significant void for both his family and colleagues and raises concerns about the risks encountered by police personnel dealing with organized and gang-related crime.

Dimpane referred to Tlometsane’s death as an immense blow to the South African Police Service, noting that the entire police community is grieving his loss.

In her remarks, she stated that the young officer was taken by what she labeled as “a ruthless criminal” before he could reach his full potential.

The acting national commissioner also acknowledged the bravery displayed by Tlometsane and Sibeko.

When faced with gunfire, the two officers chose to advance towards it as part of their responsibilities.

That decision ultimately led to their tragic end.

A 23-year-old suspect, Regan Collis, has been apprehended in connection with this fatal incident and has faced the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.

Ongoing police investigations suggest that additional arrests may follow.

The inquiry is likely to attract close attention as authorities seek to clarify how the ambush transpired and identify all individuals involved.

The shooting deaths of both Anti-Gang Unit officers has drawn increased focus on the dangers confronted by specialized teams in regions plagued by violent crime.

Tlometsane’s funeral comes after the interment of his colleague, Sibeko, who was laid to rest in Springs on Saturday.

A prior memorial service for both officers was held in Westdene, Johannesburg, where police colleagues, family members, and supporters came together to pay tribute to their commitment.

Their fatalities have reverberated throughout the police community, emphasizing the perils faced by officers responding to acts of violence.

SAPS leadership has consistently asserted that the deaths of Tlometsane and Sibeko will be remembered.

Authorities have committed to pursuing those accountable and ensuring they face justice.

For Tlometsane’s family, no investigation can alleviate the grief of losing a son, brother, and colleague at the young age of 29.

As his loved ones gather in Zebediela to lay him to rest, the circumstances surrounding his final moments remain the focus of a criminal investigation.

What is clear is that Tlometsane and Sibeko were responding to the sound of gunfire when they were ambushed.

They chose to confront the danger.

They did this in the line of duty.

And now, a young police officer dedicated to combating some of the country’s most dangerous criminals has returned to his family home for the last time.
