A woman hitchhiking from Wolmaransstad to Vryburg was reportedly robbed at gunpoint after accepting a ride from individuals in a white Volkswagen Polo. This led to the apprehension of three suspects in Makwassie.
The event took place on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, around 15:20 on the Wolmaransstad/Schweizer-Reneke Road.
Allegations state that approximately three kilometers outside Wolmaransstad, the driver brandished what looked like a firearm and demanded money and personal items from the victim. She was reportedly left in a secluded location.
Unbeknownst to the suspects, the victim managed to hide her cellphone and took a picture of the vehicle.
This image was shared within community groups, leading to an alert being issued.
With prompt police action based on received information, two men and a woman, aged 26 to 39, were located and detained in Makwassie. The woman’s belongings were also recovered.
Initial investigations have revealed that the firearm used in the robbery was a replica, and an additional charge under the Firearms Control Act is anticipated.
The vehicle’s owner has also been connected to a suspected business robbery that took place on Sunday along the Broadbent N12 in Wolmaransstad.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday (today) facing charges related to the robbery and possession of an imitation firearm, as well as the associated business robbery.
