Uber Eats Probes Allegations of R20,000 Scam by Food Delivery Driver

Uber Eats Investigates Claims of R20,000 Fraud by Delivery Personnel

South African amapiano artist Toss has raised alarm on social media after claiming that he lost approximately R20,000 due to what he described as a scam involving the Uber Eats application.

The artist behind the hit song uMlando recently shared his experience in a video that has since been removed, aiming to alert others to the potential risks. Toss stated that the incident occurred shortly before he made his concerns public, and he felt it was important to inform others after hearing that multiple individuals had faced similar issues.

“I got scammed close to R20,000 a few days ago through Uber Eats,” Toss said in the video. “The reason why I’m making a video about it is because when I went to report it, I was told there are a lot of people who reported they went through the same thing.”

The musician mentioned that some acquaintances had also reportedly dealt with questionable transactions. He expressed worry about how such financial losses could affect everyday individuals.

“Someone losing R20,000 would have messed them up a bit harder, so we don’t want it to get to that point,” he said.

In the aftermath of Toss’s comments, social media platforms were inundated with users sharing their own accounts of unauthorized or suspicious transactions. The discussion quickly evolved into a broader examination of online security, digital payment safety, and the necessity of safeguarding banking information associated with delivery services.

South African DJ Thabo Smol also commented, noting a rise in complaints related to similar incidents among users.

As the situation attracted attention, Uber Eats addressed media questions and confirmed it is currently looking into the allegations. In an official statement, the company indicated it has reached out to Toss directly regarding his claims.

“We are aware of the matter raised online and have been in direct contact with the individual involved. A full investigation is under way,” Uber Eats stated.

The company reiterated its commitment to user safety and account security. Uber Eats advised customers noticing any suspicious activity on their accounts to report it immediately through official support channels and to alert their banks if there is a belief that their payment information could be at risk.

This incident has ignited significant dialogue surrounding cybersecurity and the protection of online payments, prompting many users to call for enhanced fraud prevention measures on digital platforms.
