Una Rams, a talented singer, songwriter, and producer from South Africa, shares his personal journey in his debut album, meet me at the altar. This album reflects a significant period in his life: preparing for marriage, embracing maturity, and freely choosing love.
The project evolved from a simple wedding music concept into a comprehensive album that blends multiple genres, including Afro-fusion, soul, and R&B, while incorporating influences from Una’s Venda roots.meet me at the altar serves to encapsulate emotions and preserve significant memories.
“This is the first time I’ve been able to write about my life in real time,” Una reflects. “Instead of looking back, I wanted to honour what was happening as it happened. This is an album dedicated to my now-wife, but it’s also a celebration of tradition, family, and faith. I want these songs to live on—not just for us, but for generations.”
Every track carries a profound sense of purpose. From the tender closeness of“nguwe”to the lively beats of“takala,”the album flows like a wedding ceremony: featuring slow dances, heartfelt speeches, family gatherings, laughter, and moments of openness. Its pace is deliberate, lacking the sheen of perfection, emphasizing authenticity.
At the forefront is“tshinakaho”, a vibrant cultural anthem that has already gained popularity across Limpopo and beyond. Its lively production and culturally rich message have made it a staple at weddings within Venda communities, celebrated for its joyful depiction of love and heritage.
“Experiencingtshinakahobeing performed at weddings, with attendees dancing in traditional attire, has been one of my proudest moments,” Una noted. “That song isn’t just mine anymore—it belongs to the people. And that’s the essence of this album. It’s about crafting music that fosters community and reminds us of our roots.”
During the creation ofmeet me at the altar, Una immersed himself in cultural studies and family customs, uncovering the deeper significance of the rites and traditions that accompanied his own wedding experience. This knowledge translated into the music.
“I aimed to turn tradition into sound,” he elaborated. “To create a sonic representation that educates and resonates. This album isn’t merely for the present. I hope it serves as the soundtrack for love stories for many years ahead.”
From quiet prayers to celebratory proclamations,Meet me at the altar explores the moments where we commit. It acknowledges the places where we advocate for love—whether publicly or privately. This album embraces every aspect of that journey.
It is a debut album rooted in sincerity. It marks not only the introduction of an artist but also the emergence of a man prepared to shape a musical legacy.
