This series features an intriguing mix of personalities. Springboks interact with skateboarders, MotoGP racers share insights with hockey players, and Proteas athletes collaborate with esports figures. Throughout four episodes, the focus is on themes such as creativity, community, the spirit of the underdog, and diversity, exploring how the struggles faced by South Africans may contribute to the unique qualities of their champions.
The first episode takes viewers to Johannesburg, where spinning champion SamSam Thubane, Springbok Damian Willemse, b-girl Courtnaé Paul, and skateboarder Boipelo Awuah delve into the creative impulses stemming from their upbringing in the city. They are accompanied by comedian Jason Goliath, Lerato Phago, and artist Karabo Poppy.
The series also showcases prominent South African sports figures, such as Siya Kolisi, Kagiso Rabada, Temba Bavuma, Laura Wolvaardt, Brad Binder, Greg Minnaar, Jordy Smith, Ryan Sandes, Prudence Sekgodiso, Rayno Nel, Thati Zulu, and Themba Zwane.
At the helm of the production are directors Greg Lomas and Colwyn Thomas, known for their work on Chasing the Sun, who apply their character-focused style to a broader South African narrative. Instead of solely concentrating on achievements such as medals and awards, What We Know seeks to highlight the individuals, families, communities, and stories behind the champions.
Sixteen champions, five sporting disciplines, and one national flag come together. In honor of Heritage Month, What We Know emphasizes the connections among us, suggesting that the South African edge might not stem from a single source but rather from a collective resilience to innovate, compete, and navigate challenges.
What We Know debuted on SABC1 on Heritage Day, 24 September, with new episodes airing weekly until 15 October.
