On 15 August 2026, at the funeral of Maskandi star Scebi Dlamini, a man was observed who TikTok users believe resembles the late Mpura, sparking a flurry of activity on social media.
The video quickly transitioned from TikTok to X, featuring the caption “Mpura uvelaphi manje 🥺”, meaning “Where did Mpura come from?” This resonated with Amapiano enthusiasts across Mzansi.
What happened to Mpura?
Mpura, whose real name was Mongezi Thomas Stuurman, passed away on 7 August 2021 at the young age of 25 due to a tragic car accident while en route to a concert in Rustenburg, North West. This accident also resulted in the fatalities of fellow Amapiano artists Killer Kau, Khanya “The Voice” Hadebe, DJ Thando Tot, and TD, among others.
The timing and location of the sighting added to the emotional significance. Scebi ‘Inkosi Yamagcokama’ Dlamini, aged 29, also lost his life in a car accident while heading to a music festival in Richards Bay. His funeral attracted many fans and industry professionals who were already grieving the loss of another emerging talent in Amapiano.
The sight of someone who reminded them of Mpura at such a poignant event prompted many fans to express their emotions online.
Mzansi on the fence
While many users initially accepted that the individual was just a look-alike, the resemblance was enough to pause many scrolling through their feeds. The general sentiment leaned towards him being a doppelgänger, yet this did not prevent fans from sharing their feelings about seeing a familiar face at such a solemn gathering.
User @Triciakoki, who shared the clip, articulated the collective sentiment of astonishment.
