Participants at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) were recently exposed to vital lessons in entrepreneurship, self-development, and networking through a masterclass hosted by YouthX by Nedbank. The event was moderated by content creator and entrepreneur Amahle-Imvelo Jaxa, better known as Jaxx Amahle, who facilitated a discussion entitled “Get Your People” – highlighting how friendships, networks, and community support can enable young people to gain knowledge, mentorship, and new opportunities.
Alongside her were digital creator and entrepreneur Tamia Nontsikelelo Mokoena, who founded Tol’thema, and esteemed entrepreneur Ntokozo ‘Melo’ Ntleko, the founder of Takkie Wash SA, along with Luvuyo Mthimkulu, Senior Marketing Manager: Brand Strategy at Nedbank. Through their personal experiences, the panel conveyed essential advice regarding business development, overcoming obstacles, and recognizing the significance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals.
The key takeaway was clear: success rarely happens in isolation. For students, cultivating a network involves establishing authentic connections that can lead to opportunities, as well as the readiness to create avenues for others.
The YouthX Lives series next took place at the University of Limpopo, focusing on the theme “Get Your People + Get Your Idea”, featuring Mpho Jasone, Nedbank Sponsorship Manager for Football and Youth, alongside Tshepo Mohlala, founder of Tshepo Jeans and Tamia Nontsikelelo Mokoena, the founder of Tol’thema. The discussion was moderated by Ndavi Nokeri, Miss South Africa 2022 titleholder, model, and investment professional, who directed the conversation on the vital elements young individuals need to transform their concepts into viable opportunities.
The session highlighted three major concepts: Get Your People, Get Your Name, and Get Your Edge.
Jasone discussed the significance of community and interpersonal relationships, while Tshepo urged attendees to consider their personal branding and how they wish to be perceived. Tamia concentrated on the skills, knowledge, and mindset essential for being prepared when opportunities arise.
As part of the “Giving the Youth the Keys” initiative, the experience extended beyond discussions, allowing selected students to interact with entrepreneurs directly. Two students were chosen for job-shadowing opportunities with Tshepo Jean and Tamia Nontsikelelo Mokoena, providing them with valuable insights into the realities of entrepreneurship.
The masterclasses concluded with entertainment, awards for students, and opportunities for photos with the speakers, leaving participants energized, inspired, and ready to pursue their aspirations with a strong network.
