In a conversation with The Yanos Magazine, the artists elaborate on the underlying themes, musical elements, and the visual narrative surrounding Heke—an impactful addition to the conscious Amapiano movement.
1. “Heke” translates to “beware”—what led to this warning, and which realities does the song depict?
“Heke” draws from our everyday observations in Johannesburg. It serves as a caution shrouded in rhythm. In this city, beauty coexists with peril. People may appear friendly, but
their intentions can be hidden. I aimed to encapsulate that feeling when your instincts say, ‘Exercise caution; not everything that glitters is gold.’ The track urges listeners to safeguard their energy and proceed wisely.
2. You portray Heke as “a cautionary tale wrapped in rhythm. What facets of Joburg’s nightlife influenced the juxtaposition between allure and risk?
Joburg’s nightlife is intoxicating. The vibrant lights, stylish outfits, and success are enticing; however, lurking beneath are jealousy, temptation, and deceit. I’ve witnessed individuals lose their way, friendships dissolve due to pride, and troubling situations unfold swiftly. This duality significantly influenced “Heke.” It captures the essence of being at an enchanting party while knowing that a single misstep could alter the evening.
3. The production on Heke feels darker and more cinematic compared to a standard Amapiano track. What sound choices contributed to this atmosphere?
We incorporated deep, haunting log drums, atmospheric pads, and a cinematic bass to create a vital rhythm. Diverging from typical bright piano melodies, we opted for minimal keys and tension-building synths to evoke a cinematic feel. Each element was thoughtfully selected; we wanted listeners to feel enveloped in a narrative, rather than just on a dance floor.
4. How did the collaboration among Umthakathi Kush, DJ MyDowa, and Tman Xpress come to fruition, and what distinct energy did you each bring to the project?
MyDowa and I connected through a shared appreciation for sound; he has a profound understanding of the street scene. Tman Xpress excels at transforming feelings into memorable hooks. I contributed the storytelling aspect, the vision, and the raw essence of the message. My Dowa infused the groove and ambiance, while Tman brought the spirit and expressive voice that captivates audiences. Collectively, we crafted something that transcends individual talent.
5. What was the studio experience like—did the song materialize quickly, or did it require refinement over time?
“Heke” emerged from a deeply creative session. The foundational elements of the song were established rapidly, almost as if it was destined to be created. However, we meticulously refined the intricate details, textures, and tone over an extended period to ensure the message aligned seamlessly with the mood. We allowed the song to guide us.
6. Tman Xpress is celebrated for his catchy hooks. How did you navigate the balance between the serious message of the song and the dance-floor appeal his voice provides?
That’s Tman’s unique gift. His voice can convey a warning while still encouraging movement. I wrote with this in mind, allowing him the opportunity to shine while keeping the message clear. This contrast enhances the song. Listeners find themselves dancing, yet their minds remain engaged.
7. The music video for Heke is described as cinematic and grounded in local narratives. What was your vision for the visuals, and how do they echo the track’s themes of desire and deception?
The intention was to portray the allure and hazards present in the streets. The video tells a story where desire obscures judgment, and realization of deception only comes after it’s too late. It’s crafted like a short film featuring shadows, slow-motion tension, street life, luxurious moments, and an underlying caution. We wanted audiences to feel the intensity of the story, not just observe it.
8. The contrast between “luxury and loss” is significant. What message do you hope viewers take away from the video?
I want audiences to recognize that temptation can have unforeseen costs. One can be surrounded by opulence, yet a misguided interaction or choice can lead to unexpected loss. The video illustrates both the pleasurable aspects and the harsh realities that often coexist. It serves as a reflection of real-life situations in our communities.
9. Amapiano is typically linked with celebration and rhythm, yet Heke introduces elements of introspection and honesty. Do you believe the genre is prepared for more socially relevant storytelling like this?
Without a doubt. Amapiano has matured and transitioned into a global phenomenon. It’s more than just rhythm; it’s about life experiences. Audiences are eager for narratives that connect with reality and meaning. I believe we are entering a phase where the genre can inspire both enjoyment and contemplation. “Heke” contributes to this progression.
10. What does Heke signify for each of you personally as artists, narrators, and voices from South Africa’s vibrant streets?
For me, “Heke” symbolizes awareness, personal growth, and taking control of your path. It serves as a reminder that emerging from the streets doesn’t mean succumbing to every pitfall. MyDowa views it as the evolution of sound, pushing the genre into a more daring space. Tman perceives it as truth conveyed through his artistry. Collectively, “Heke” reflects our contribution to the culture: a blend of message, rhythm, and story straight from South Africa.
