Behind the Scenes of 'Youngins': An Exclusive Insight with Keneilwe Matidze

Showmax has unveiled the trailer for the eagerly awaited third season of the acclaimed teen drama Youngins.

This series has already achieved a milestone for the highest number of views in a single day on the African streaming platform since its revival.

SHOWMAX’S ‘YOUNGINS‘

Youngins has emerged as a delightful highlight in South African entertainment, showcasing new talent and paving the way for young actors like Ayakha Ntunja and Kealeboga Masango.

Both actors have subsequently gained recognition in popular Mzansi Magic soap operas Inimba and Genesis, as reported by Showmax Stories.

The concluding season is set to begin streaming on Showmax starting September 19. To celebrate this thrilling occasion, Keneilwe Matidze, the vibrant actress and casting director responsible for the show’s dynamic cast, offered her insights.

Keneilwe also takes on the role of Pearl, the spirited Life Orientation teacher.

KENEILWE AND ‘YOUNGINS’

Did she anticipate that Youngins would turn out to be such a triumph? “Honestly, yes!” Keneilwe stated. “The energy in the audition room was electrifying.

Kids arrived from 8 am to 8 pm, and even after long hours, we were all dancing together outside. That atmosphere was contagious.

I thought, ‘If I were sitting at home, I’d be completely hooked!’ The talent level was remarkable, and the storyline promised something extraordinary.”

THE FAN FAVOURITE STAR

One character that stands out among fans is Tumelo, portrayed by Lebogang Lephotsoana. Keneilwe characterized Lebo as a “triple threat who could act, sing, and dance.”

She remarked, “Lebo radiates life and positivity. Tumelo acts as the glue within the friendship circle, and Lebo naturally embodies that role.

He’s cooperative and infectious with his energy. He even helped me stay up-to-date with TikTok slang and dance trends!”

BREAK OUT STAR ON ‘YOUNGINS’

Another actor who is making a name for himself on ‘Youngins’ is Thabiso Ramotshela, who plays Mahlatse. He added significant emotional depth, particularly in Season 2.

Keneilwe commended his commitment: “Thabiso put in the effort to help viewers connect with Mahlatse’s raw and emotional narrative.

He pushed himself to great lengths, and at times, I worried about him, but his dedication made the character’s journey authentic and relatable.”

THE SUPPORTING CAST

The supporting characters in the show also bring their A-game. Tshepo Matlala, who plays Tshepo, adds humor and heart to the mix.

According to Keneilwe, “Tshepo performs with his entire body and has taught me immensely. We practiced off-set and explored ways to elevate scenes beyond what’s in the script. He constantly surprises me with new energy.”

Youngins is also acknowledged for providing authentic representation of queer characters. Keneilwe shared, “We made a concerted effort during chemistry tests for Tabile Tau (Sefako) and Lebogang (Tumelo).

Creating intimacy on screen is challenging, regardless of sexuality, but these two were open, comfortable, and committed to representing the story with honesty. Their camaraderie and professionalism brought the scenes to life.”

WHERE TO WATCH

The chemistry among the cast extends beyond the screen. Keneilwe recounted a heartfelt story about Katlego Moloke, who plays Alex and came out during his audition.

“He mentioned, ‘Yeah, but Tumelo is gay, and I’m gay too.’ That truly humbled me and highlighted how much South Africa has progressed,” she reflected. “Katlego infused the character of Alex with nuances I hadn’t foreseen.”

Viewers on Showmax can tune into the exciting conclusion of the final season starting September 19, with three new episodes being released each week.

In the meantime, Seasons 1 and 2 are still available for rewatch on Showmax, and Season 1 is broadcast on Mzansi Wethu, DStv Channel 163, every Wednesday to Friday at 19:00.
