- Vusi Nova shocked fans after social media posts suggested he had died
- However, this was revealed to be a publicity stunt for a new music video featuring a “fake funeral”
- This bold strategy left many users confused, with some feeling that the singer had gone too far
South African artist Vusi Nova caused quite a stir on social media after several messages from friends and colleagues implied he had passed away.
On March 31, 2026, numerous tributes from fellow artists emerged, claiming Nova had died days earlier, leaving fans completely devastated and in disbelief. The absence of communication from his official accounts contributed to the somber mood, leading many to believe the news.
Contrary to the heartbreaking rumors, it was later disclosed that the supposed “death” was nothing but a carefully orchestrated scheme for a “fake funeral” corresponding to the release of the Phendula singer’s new single, When I’m Gone.
Lifestyle creators 10minutes_withthestar posted clips on TikTok, showcasing the production of the funeral scene complete with a casket, floral arrangements, and attendees dressed in black.
The funeral scene included various recognizable faces such as actors Luthuli Dlamini, Anele Matoti, and Moshe Ndiki, all of whom appeared in character, dramatically mourning Nova during the staged procession. The involvement of well-known figures added to the confusion, leaving fans questioning the seriousness of the situation.

Nova later explained the reasoning behind the concept, stating that the heavy themes of his song inspired the imagery of his own funeral.
“It’s a song about when I’m gone and how I want to be remembered by loved ones. We’re here at the shoot of my funeral, which tells the story of who I am and the creativity that runs in my mind.”
Behind-the-scenes footage also depicted Nova humorously directing the faux ceremony. Instead of a somber moment, he was seen instructing the “mourners,” transforming the initial shock into an unconventional promotional tactic.
Nevertheless, the reception was mixed, as some felt the stunt was an inappropriate joke that exploited sensitive subjects.
In a nation that has recently dealt with prominent losses in the music scene, including Nova’s late friend Zahara, the portrayal of a “funeral” for a beloved artist seemed more like an insensitive spectacle rather than creative expression.
