Young Shaka is an acclaimed artist.
Already recognized as an artist in Mzansi, the South African prodigy Shaka Madida is displaying his creative abilities on a global scale.
At the tender age of nine, Shaka Madida is extending his artistic reach beyond South Africa, with his pieces being showcased in an exhibition in the Netherlands.
Shaka’s parents are well-known media figure Nandi Madida and Grammy Award winner Zakes Bantwini. He is presenting his artwork at Connecting the World Through Art in Alkmaar.
This exhibition opens at the historic Kapelkerk, uniting artists, students, and communities from various cultural backgrounds. Its goal is to honor creativity and facilitate cultural exchange.
For Shaka, the showcase presents a chance to share his artistic vision with a broader international audience.
From birthday celebration to an international showcase
Shaka first garnered public attention in November 2025 when he celebrated his ninth birthday with his inaugural solo art exhibition at Magugu House in Johannesburg.
Rather than having a traditional birthday party, the young boy commemorated the occasion by showcasing his artwork. His special day transformed into a celebration of his artistic passions, culminating in his first art sale that evening.
His parents have been instrumental in supporting his creative journey as he continues to harness his skills and refine his unique artistic voice.
Participating in the exhibition in the Netherlands marks another significant milestone and a realized dream. It advances him from his initial solo display in Johannesburg to an international stage where artists from diverse backgrounds can present their works.
Art unites various cultures
Connecting the World Through Art aims to promote cultural exchange. It grants visitors a chance to experience a variety of artistic insights.
The program offers opportunities to interact with the participating artists. This includes a live printmaking workshop conducted by artist and designer Isi de Jongh. There will also be live musical performances and DJ sets.
This exhibition is organized by students from Hogeschool Inholland Alkmaar in collaboration with art marketing agency Novus Arte. Hochschule Mittweida in Germany and the Universidad de Zaragoza School of Arts in Spain are also participating.
Shaka’s involvement is significant as he showcases the importance of creating opportunities for youth to pursue their passions. Additionally, it demonstrates how they can share their creations beyond their local communities.
His journey serves as an inspiring model for emerging young artists. It illustrates that pathways to develop and exhibit artistic talent can begin early in life.
