DJ Maphorisa demands ‘Ngud’ royalties from Nota after 10 years
What should have been a joyful occasion for music executive Nota Baloyi turned into yet another public dispute with DJ Maphorisa, as the producer reignited their long-standing argument related to royalties.
The conflict emerged when Nota celebrated the 10th anniversary of Ngud, a popular track by Kwesta featuring Cassper Nyovest.
On X (formerly Twitter), Nota shared the news with pride, stating: “Released Ngud 10 years ago today.”
This post caught the attention of DJ Maphorisa, who took the chance to direct criticism at Nota.
The producer publicly questioned when he would receive compensation for his contribution to the song, expressing his long-standing frustration.
“Are you gonna pay me my royalties, yoh🙄 been waiting 10 years,” Maphorisa wrote, sparking a renewed discussion online.
In response, Baloyi engaged in the conversation, attempting to clarify why Maphorisa believes he is not entitled to payment.
His reply combined explanation with criticism, referring to disputes over music sampling and publishing rights that he argues affect the ownership of the track.
“You’re too young to forget you sampled Camino de Sol, and they claimed 100% of the publishing Alzheimer’s. Almost 10 years since One Dance, and you’re not even owed one cent on that. Add 49 cents, and I can explain for you as 50 told me, if they hate, then let them hate and watch the money pile up!” he wrote.
The debate gathered momentum; while some people found the exchanges amusing, others criticized the public display of a recurring dispute, questioning the need for resolution through sociale media.
