Tyla at the 68th Grammy Awards
Tyla’s success at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards has led to a variety of opinions on social media.
On Sunday evening, the South African artist received the Best African Music Performance award for her popular single Push 2 Start, surpassing a competitive group of Nigerian artists in the same category.
Nominees included the likes of Davido, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, and Burna Boy, but Tyla ultimately took home the award due to her song’s significant worldwide impact.
The 24-year-old quickly gained attention across various platforms as her fans celebrated her milestone as a two-time Grammy winner.
Despite the acclaim, her victory also faced pushback, particularly from some Nigerian commentators who expressed doubt regarding the Recording Academy’s choice, suggesting the Grammys overlooked other worthy candidates.
“Davido deserved this one. Tyla’s win is impressive and her accomplishments have been remarkable, but when considering impact, longevity, and contributions to African music globally, this award rightly belonged to Davido. Recognition should reflect both contemporary success and legacy, and in this instance, Davido had the edge,” one user on X remarked.
Another user added, “I swear Davido was clearly robbed again. What’s Push 2 Start?”
An additional commenter voiced similar concerns, stating, “Davido should’ve won it. The Grammys are losing relevance.”
You may not like the girl ooo but that song was the biggest in that category (before you argue check the numbers).
