ETV’s latest daily drama show Emzini premiered with a compelling first episode on Monday, April 13. Despite the obscurity of the initial installment, it hinted at potential developments in the narrative.
The Nkosi family, like many others, harbors hidden truths. Their heritage is rooted in mysteries and bloodshed. But what lies beneath the surface?
AN INTRIGUING START OF ‘EMZINI’
The narrative kicks off with Shaka Nkosi, a 34-year-old man. He learns from a traditional healer named Gogo Ongabizwa Ngegama about the necessity of a purification ritual.
At just 10 years old, Shaka fatally shot a police officer who was attempting to harm his mother and her partner, Panyaza.
Fleeing with his mother, young Shaka abandoned Panyaza due to the injuries inflicted during the police encounter, ultimately leading to a 26-year prison sentence.
Shaka: “This ritual… do you have any idea how much this may cost us, Gogo? Everything. Including my freedom.”
Gogo: ” Everything you’ve established has roots in bloodshed.”
Shaka: “That policeman was intent on killing my mother.”
Gogo: “Shaka, you didn’t merely take that man’s life; you eradicated his entire lineage, and that’s incredibly costly.”
SHAKA THE BELOVED NKOSI “HEIR”
The second act introduces us to Zakhele Nkosi, the family patriarch, during his extravagant retirement celebration.
In his address, he proudly speaks of his cherished son Shaka and proclaims that he will inherit the legacy of the Nkosi family.
Zakhele: “I want to say to my son, I have absolute faith that Shaka will uphold my legacy and that of the Nkosi name, spreading it across the globe.”
SHAKA VS BANDILE?
Are we prepared for a clash between Shaka and his younger sibling, Bandile, particularly after Bandile remarked, “Everything in this family always revolves around Shaka?”
Post Zakhele’s announcement of Shaka’s 35th birthday celebration at their Emzini Lounge, Junior Nkosi, the youngest son, proposed that Bandile oversee the party planning to avoid any blunders.
Bandile’s remark piqued interest: “I could never make an error that Dad forgets about.” This raises the question: is Bandile the overlooked middle child?
IS ZAKHELE AND DUDU IN AN OPEN MARRIAGE?
The dynamics within this marriage seem quite peculiar.
During his retirement party, Zakhele flirted openly with a younger woman. Dudu, whom he praised during his speech, appeared remarkably unfazed, which surprised Gogo.
Gogo: “Goodness, girl, why do you seem so untroubled with your man entertaining someone else?
Just then, Dudu received a phone call from Panyaza, currently incarcerated, urgently requesting to see her.
In future episodes, Dudu exhibits some unusual boundaries, stating, “I’m indifferent to your affairs. Just don’t bring them to our home while I’m there.”
This raises eyebrows: could this imply an open marriage? Only the future knows the truth.
IS PANYAZA THE FATHER OF SHAKA?
At the conclusion of the first episode, Dudu leaves her husband’s celebration to meet Panyaza in prison.
Upon her arrival, he reveals that he has been granted parole and will be released after serving 26 years.
He then states, “I believe it’s time to reveal the truth to the boy (Shaka).”
If Zakhele isn’t Shaka’s biological father, it would undeniably add another layer of intrigue to the so-called “Nkosi family legacy.”
BANDILE AND JUNIOR’S STORYLINE IS ONE TO LOOK OUT FOR
It’s regrettable that Zakhele places his trust in one son while neglecting the other two, who could potentially take over the Nkosi empire if the favored “heir” is not of Nkosi blood.
Emzini succeeds Smoke and Mirrors, which concluded after a three-season run on the free-to-air channel.
The series features a remarkable cast, including Muzi Mthabela from Isibaya, Khabonina Qubeka from Shaka Ilembe, Tyson Mathonsi, and the renowned Motshabi Tyelele, among others.
