Amapiano artist Zee Nxumalo recently defended her recognition after a commenter attempted to diminish her placement on a Spotify billboard in New York City.
The artist marked this milestone by posting a snapshot of the billboard on X, indicating her participation in Spotify’s EQUAL Africa initiative, which aims to spotlight women who contribute significantly to the music sector.
While a majority of her followers celebrated the honor, one user dismissed it as merely a paid advertisement.
“You paid,” the commenter wrote.
Zee found humor in the suggestion and responded with skepticism.
“I Paid for a billboard in New York? lol,” she inquired.
The dialogue continued as another user entered the conversation, suggesting that someone must have financially supported the billboard.
“lol yes it’s paid for… might be your or your label or distributor but it’s paid for,” they stated.
Zee, however, was swift to clarify, noting that the billboard was part of Spotify’s recognition program, rather than a result of personal funding.
“1. Fix your grammar!
2 this is a Spotify billboard, they picked me to cover their billboard…
You can’t pay for accolades, you earn them.”
Her remarks resonated with her supporters, many of whom commended her for defending her accomplishments and educating critics on the Spotify EQUAL initiative.
