Lawrence Maleka is officially making his return to television. The engaging actor and past presenter of Big Brother Mzansi will portray the character Mzi in the upcoming drama series, Critical But Stable.
Set to debut on Sunday, 26 July 2026, at 8 PM on Mzansi Magic, the show is already stirring significant interest. Maleka recently discussed what motivated him to join this new venture.
Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed novel by noted South African author Angela Makholwa, Critical But Stable centers around a desperate businessman facing both personal and financial crises. In a frantic attempt to rescue his gravely ill wife and save his failing business, he enlists his closest friends in a perilous insurance scheme.
In an interview with DailySun, Maleka shared that the impressive and varied cast of the project was an immediate attraction. The series features an outstanding ensemble of local talent, including Pimville actress Mapaseka Koetle, along with notable performers like Motsoaledi Setumo and Fortune Thobejane.
“There was a lot of talent involved, and that’s always exciting as an actor because you’re constantly being challenged.’
Maleka, who gained acclaim for his performance alongside Sindi Dlathu in The River, remarked that taking on Mzi represents an exciting shift from his earlier roles. He highlighted that it was not only the impressive cast that captivated him, but also the raw and realistic nature of the script.
“What I liked about the story is that it feels believable. It’s not about superheroes or larger-than-life characters. These are ordinary people who make one decision and then have to live with the consequences.”
The series examines the societal expectations that often compel men to shoulder family responsibilities at any cost. Although Mzi has good intentions, his desperate actions lead to chaos. Maleka appreciated the chance to explore these intricate themes, stating that he dedicated considerable effort to understanding the experiences of people in similar predicaments to ensure his performance was “grounded in honesty.”
With its relatable narratives and stellar cast, Maleka is confident that Critical But Stable will engage viewers from the outset.
