Operation Shanela II: Over 1,000 Arrests in a Sweeping Crime Crackdown

Law enforcement in Free State has made a significant impact by arresting over 1,000 suspects while recovering drugs, illegal alcohol, and suspected stolen copper cables in a recent crime enforcement operation.

The extensive police initiative led to the apprehension of 1,015 individuals, of whom 308 were on the wanted list for serious offenses, including murder, rape, and assault.

These arrests occurred during the weekly operations of Operation Shanela II, where detectives engaged in specific track and trace efforts targeting fugitives, supported by multidisciplinary police teams deployed to areas identified as high crime zones.

Among those arrested were 22 individuals wanted for alleged rape and 10 for other sexual crimes. Additionally, seven were taken into custody for murder, 11 for attempted murder, and 67 for assault with intent to do serious bodily harm.

The suspects are set to face various courts in the upcoming days.

High intensity police operations across Free State

These arrests were part of a concerted high visibility operation, which involved collaboration among different law enforcement agencies to curtail criminal activities.

Throughout the initiative, officers executed thousands of policing actions, which included:

  • 5,350 high visibility patrols
  • 13,227 stop-and-search operations
  • 645 inspections of licensed liquor establishments
  • 147 compliance checks at second-hand dealers
  • 56 inspections at scrapyards and recycling centers
  • 76 visits to spaza shops and informal businesses
  • 2,831 farm visits coordinated with the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Employment and Labour

Officials highlighted that this coordinated strategy was meant to enhance police presence, enforce regulations, and target those engaged in serious organized crime.

Drugs, alcohol, and suspected stolen copper cables recovered

The operation resulted in the seizure of substantial amounts of items suspected of being connected to criminal activities.

Authorities confiscated 703 grams of Tik, also recognized as crystal methamphetamine, along with 59 Mandrax pills.

The operational team also retrieved:

  • 950.68 liters of alcoholic beverages
  • 108 packets of tobacco
  • 305 kilograms of suspected stolen copper cables

These seizures are anticipated to aid ongoing investigations into illegal drug distributions, unlicensed trading operations, and crimes associated with infrastructure.

Police reaffirm commitment to addressing crime hotspots

The South African Police Service announced that Operation Shanela II will persist throughout Free State, with additional deployments planned for areas identified as crime hotspots.

The sustained operations aim to locate wanted individuals, deter violent crime, and strengthen law enforcement visibility in communities province-wide.

With numerous wanted suspects already apprehended, police officials emphasized that the goal remains focused on ongoing operations to enhance public safety and bring wrongdoers to justice.
