Discussing the dynamics among artists, creatives, and the larger hip-hop community, Maglera Doe Boy emphasized that the energy circulated within the culture has the potential to inspire greater initiatives if individuals actively contribute to it.

“I thought that wave that happened before was because we were giving. We mustn’t forgive; we must give. Hip-hop is too forgiving,” Maglera stated.

He proposed that hip-hop could take cues from other musical traditions that tend to safeguard their movements and show restraint in quickly moving past established contexts. He believes there is a necessity for more collaboration and a stronger commitment to develop what the culture has already created.

Maglera also pointed out a contrast he sees between hip-hop and other genres, highlighting that some musical styles tend to keep their sounds more centralized instead of merging continuously with outside influences.

“I won’t say other genres’ names. They don’t mix at all. They just boil it now, and tomorrow it’s drop,” he remarked.

His remarks contribute to a larger dialogue regarding how South African hip-hop can maintain its growth. Instead of merely honoring historical moments and moving forward, Maglera appears to advocate for artists and industry figures to continually nourish the culture through collaboration, creativity, and active participation.

For him, the advancement of hip-hop may hinge less on forgiving past events and more on providing the culture with new elements from which to thrive.
