The talented Maskandi musician, originally from Msinga in KwaZulu-Natal, lost his life in the early hours of Sunday, 9 August 2026, following a collision at traffic lights near Melomed Hospital in Richards Bay.
Responders, including emergency services and police, arrived swiftly, but Dlamini had sustained injuries that proved fatal. A member of his crew, Gamu Mchunu, also died in the incident, while two others in the vehicle were hospitalized with injuries.
Siboniso Duma, the MEC for KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements, confirmed the tragic news and honored Dlamini for his significant impact on South African music. He referred to Dlamini as a national treasure, whose contributions earned him a fond regard among many Maskandi enthusiasts.
Scebi Dlamini was also known for his modesty and for elevating uMsinga’s status in the cultural landscape through his music.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts and Culture extended its sympathies and acknowledged the extent of Dlamini’s contributions to the Maskandi genre. Over his career, he released more than 20 albums and became a prominent voice in the field.
The impact of his passing is particularly heavy on his family. His uncle, Mthethelele Dlamini, spoke about the hopeful future the artist was shaping, which included plans for a new home and a life with his wife.
Dlamini’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday at his residence in uMsinga.
For Big Zulu, this loss is deeply personal. The two musicians collaborated on the 2019 song “Ubuhle Bakho”, which appeared on Big Zulu’s album Ungqongqoshe Wongqongqoshe. Dlamini provided both vocals and lyrics for the track.
