Dineo Moloisane’s Hilarious Breakdown of VAT Woes

South African radio host and influencer Dineo Moloisane has sparked conversation among the public. A TikTok post by Mzansi Spotlight on 28 May 2026 featured her expressing dissatisfaction with the 15% VAT imposed on goods and services. The video quickly gained traction, resonating with many viewers who share her sentiments.

Originally from Pretoria, Moloisane, also known as King Dineo, openly aired her concerns in the video. She questioned both the nature of VAT and the necessity for everyday South Africans to contribute to it. Her comments resonated widely on social media almost immediately.

Current sentiments on VAT

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a levy applied to most goods and services when they are purchased. In South Africa, the current VAT rate is 15%, meaning that R15 goes to the government for every R100 spent. This tax is the government’s second-largest revenue source following personal income tax, funding various public services such as health, education, transportation, and social grants.

The tax has seen a tumultuous period recently. Earlier in 2025, the government attempted to increase the rate to 15.5%, but strong opposition from the public and political figures led to a retraction. For now, the rate remains at 15%.

Moloisane is known for her candidness. As a business owner and mother of two, she has cultivated a strong following by being genuine. She is also the founder of the Magic Diet brand.

A wave of responses from South Africans flooded the comments section as they shared their own frustrations. Many expressed that VAT on electricity is particularly burdensome, while others made light of the situation, suggesting the funds support government commissions. One user posed a question about the rationale behind a tax that seemingly provides no added value, yet keeps rising.
