Radio personality DJ Fresh, whose real name is Thato Sikwane, confirmed his exit from 938FM, the radio station he co-founded with Unathi Nkayi. Fresh elaborated on his decision to leave the station.
The news follows closely after Kaya 959 announced Sizwe Dhlomo’s departure from its breakfast programming. Starting 1 July 2026, Kaya 959 has chosen DJ Fresh to host the Breakfast Show, leading to a new chapter for the seasoned broadcaster.
DJ Fresh part ways with 938FM after years of service
In a recent discussion with TshisaLIVE, DJ Fresh revealed that talks with Kaya 959 started in the early part of the previous year. He hesitated to finalize the agreement, as he was focused on nurturing 938FM. Ultimately, he made the decision to sign the contract after concluding it resonated with his career aspirations and family needs. Fresh remarked:
“It feels right and the timing is perfect.”
He also highlighted that clarity influenced the decision:
“What made me say yes to Kaya was the clarity it came with. They were clear about what they wanted — clear about the terms, clear about the repositioning of breakfast and the station.”
Discussing his transition to Kaya 959, Fresh stated:
“I’ve always been purpose-driven, always been about my why. It feels like purpose. I’m not going to pretend there isn’t a deep sense of gratitude because there is, but I think, more than anything, it feels like alignment.
Reflecting on his impact at 938FM
In 2019, DJ Fresh departed mainstream radio to co-create 938FM with Unathi Nkayi, a platform he continues to support. In an emotional statement to his colleagues at 938FM, DJ Fresh expressed his appreciation.
“Working with this team has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career. Every single one of you showed up, gave your best and made magic under circumstances that were not always easy.” He added that “the best part of that dream was the people in this group and on 938 nje.”
DJ Fresh reuniting with his original YFM colleagues

“We feel like we’re coming home together, and we want to make mornings on Kaya 959 essential listening.”
