DJ Speedsta has responded to claims that he overlooks new artists in his performances, suggesting that critics might not have witnessed his sets firsthand.
The discussion began on X when a user, @YandaMhlamvu, accused some DJs of not supporting upcoming talent effectively.
The user specifically called out Speedsta, stating: “Besides the rich kids, the other artists that aren’t rich didn’t get much help in order to get a breakthrough. Speedsta is one of the DJs who would rather play old classics instead of putting on the kids. Not saying there’s anything wrong playing classics, but uplift the kids too.”
Speedsta dismissed the criticism, stating: “98% of the people that say ‘I’m old, play old music etc’ have never even heard me play! 😂😂💀💀 Stop making excuses about everything to entertain a narrative. You’ve probably never heard me DJ in your life. Stop the Cap! 😭💀.”
His remarks highlight an ongoing discussion in South African hip hop regarding the role of DJs in influencing the music scene.
As DJs’ song selections often impact which tracks gain popularity, they are regularly evaluated for either their preference for nostalgic tracks or their support for emerging talent.
The exchange elicited varied responses.
While some reiterated their critique, user @yungdontrust replied, “I’ve heard you play Speedsta, you play old music.”
Conversely, others rallied to his support, suggesting the criticism was disproportionate. “People just hate you Speedy lol,” added @rollxcxstro.
