Gernot Rohr, the former coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has discussed the missed opportunity for Michael Olise to represent Nigeria.

Rohr commented:
“Michael Olise should have been playing for Nigeria by now. I did everything possible to bring him in, but he rejected my invitation to join the Super Eagles in 2019.”
This statement comes as Olise continues to gain traction in European football, with discussions of his potential candidacy for the Ballon d’Or growing.

During his tenure as head coach of the Super Eagles, Rohr kept a close eye on Olise from 2019 to 2020, as the young midfielder developed at Reading FC in the English Championship.
Rohr had high hopes for Olise, believing he had the potential to represent one of Europe’s top footballing nations.
It is important to note that later on, Olise was included on Nigeria’s standby list prior to the 2021 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho.
