South Africa-native performer Johannes Radebe is poised to make history on television after being announced as one of the fresh hosts of the BBC’s popular entertainment program, Strictly Come Dancing.
This week, the network revealed that Radebe will team up with TV host Emma Willis and comedian Josh Widdicombe in a revitalized presenting lineup for the show’s 24th season, taking over from long-standing hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman who will be departing in October 2025.
For Johannes Radebe, who has emerged as a prominent figure on British television since his debut on the show in 2018, this role signifies a significant transition from professional dancer to a presenter on one of the UK’s leading programs.
Made history
Originating from Zamdela, a township near Sasolburg in the Free State, Radebe initially established his fame on South Africa’s version of Strictly Come Dancing before transitioning to the UK version.
Since his move, he has danced with various celebrities including Catherine Tyldesley, Annabel Croft, and John Whaite – with whom he created history in 2021 by forming the competition’s first all-male duo.
In reaction to the announcement, Radebe expressed that this chance holds considerable significance for him.
“This show has always stood for joy, heart and togetherness, and I feel deeply honoured to now help carry that magic forward,” he said.
“I’m ready – sequins, nerves and all.”
Milestone moment
The BBC has not yet clarified how hosting duties will be split, but it has been reported that Widdicombe may assume Claudia Winkleman’s much-loved upstairs “Clauditorium” position, while Radebe could take on the role of a wandering backstage presenter.
This change also positions Johannes Radebe as the first presenter of South African descent to host the main program of Strictly Come Dancing – a groundbreaking occasion for local representation in British media.
BBC Chief Content Officer Kate Phillips commended the dynamic between the new trio, noting they infuse fresh vibrancy into the enduring format.
The judging panel – Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke – is expected to return, along with 15 professional dancers from the previous season and a number of new faces.
For Radebe, whose journey from a Free State township to international television fame has inspired countless individuals, this new role signifies yet another extraordinary chapter in an already groundbreaking career.
