Khama Billiat, a former player for Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, has shared insights regarding his time at Naturena, noting that Chiefs ensured he received significant financial benefits during his tenure.
Billiat transitioned from Sundowns to Chiefs in 2018, and he acknowledged that reports regarding his impressive salary were largely accurate.
During his discussion on Afrik-Foot’s Off The Pitch Chat podcast, the ex-Chiefs player expressed gratitude for the financial backing he received throughout his five years with the team.
“They really took care of me, and I really appreciate Kaizer Chiefs; they were there for me,” said Billiat.
“I am not sure how much others were getting paid, but I was paid well, and I really appreciate it.”
The former Zimbabwean international emphasized that many of the club’s senior players were well-compensated.
“They paid a couple of us very well. I believe Kaizer Chiefs pays everyone very well. I was one of the highest paid at Kaizer Chiefs compared to a lot of other teams.”
Despite his impressive salary reflecting his status, Billiat’s on-field performances at Naturena did not consistently mirror the success he enjoyed at Sundowns.
In 126 matches for Chiefs, Billiat netted 24 goals and provided 29 assists—numbers that, while commendable, fell short of the elite standards he set at Chloorkop.
At Sundowns, he was a standout attacker in African football, contributing 48 goals and 43 assists in 144 appearances, all while helping the club achieve both domestic and continental success.
During his time with Sundowns, Billiat celebrated:
* Three league titles
* A CAF Champions League title
Operating effectively from wide areas or just behind the striker, Billiat showcased a blend of speed, creativity, and finishing skills that made him one of the top players in the PSL.
However, his experiences at Chiefs were more complex. While he had moments of brilliance and showed glimpses of his former self, the team failed to secure trophies, leaving many fans questioning whether they had witnessed the best version of Billiat in gold and black.
