Lowfeye Discusses the Influence of His Late Mother on the “Nosange” Album. The rapper Lowfeye has shared the significant personal narrative behind his newest album, Nosange, confirming that the work represents more than just another collection of songs. It serves as a poignant homage to his late mother, whose impact remains a significant part of his life and artistic expression.

<pDuring a recent episode of Culture’s Biggest Podcast, Lowfeye reflected on the period of uncertainty that followed his mixtape’s release. Although he was aware that another project was on the horizon, he confessed that he lacked a specific vision for its title initially.
“The idea came after I released the mixtape,” he stated. “At first, I wasn’t sure what I was going to call the album. I kept asking myself, ‘What am I going to name it?’ But I knew I wanted to do something in my mother’s name because that’s where I believe I got this talent from, and also the drive that first got me here.”
The significance of the album’s title extends beyond nostalgia for Lowfeye. It symbolizes the person he credits with bequeathing him both his musical abilities and the motivation to follow his aspirations.
He noted that his mother had also pursued music, a realization that continues to inspire his career. In hindsight, he recognizes that music has always been integral to his identity.
“I always say this in interviews: I was inspired by the fact that she used to be a musician as well. That made me feel like, ‘Yo, I want to do this for her too.’ Looking back now, I realize I’ve always loved music, even prior to that realization.”
Beyond paying tribute to his mother’s legacy, Nosange became an outlet for Lowfeye to address his own emotional struggles. He described the album as a crucial step in his personal development, explaining that he needed to confront his past burdens before moving forward.
“At the same time, I felt like there were a lot of things I had been carrying emotionally. Before I could truly continue my journey and move forward, I had to address those things and fully heal from them.”
Lowfeye also indicated that Nosange is closely tied to his previous project, Umphana Makulu. He views this album not as a departure from previous themes, but rather as a continuation of the narratives that fans may recognize from his earlier work.
“I touched on some of those experiences in Umphana Makulu, and if you listen closely, you’ll find a correlation between that project and this album. So Nosange is, in a way, a continuation of that story.”
During the discussion, it became evident that Nosange represents one of the most personal projects Lowfeye has created. The interviewer noted the emotional richness of the album, highlighting that many tracks are particularly sincere expressions of his journey.
By transforming grief into music and narrating his healing process through song, Lowfeye has produced an album that both memorializes his mother and captures his emotional evolution. Nosange transcends being merely an album. It stands as a personal declaration of love, loss, resilience, and the restorative nature of music.
