A botched ATM explosion escalated into a tragedy early Wednesday morning in Mmakau, North West, resulting in the death of one security guard and serious injuries to another.
Law enforcement officials have initiated an investigation into ATM bombing, murder, and attempted murder charges following an attack involving six armed individuals who reportedly targeted an ATM located outside a closed local pub.
Colonel Adéle Myburgh, a spokesperson for North West police, stated that officers were dispatched to the scene around 01:50 after receiving alarms regarding the ATM bombing.
Upon their arrival, authorities found two security guards, a 62-year-old and a 51-year-old, who had responded to the situation.
The older guard was pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS). The second guard was critically wounded by gunfire and transported to a local hospital, where he remains in intensive care.
Initial findings suggest that the suspects used explosives to breach the ATM in an effort to steal cash. However, their actions did not yield any monetary gain.
It is believed that the guards confronted the assailants during the robbery attempt, leading to a violent exchange of gunfire.
According to investigators, the group of six unidentified men, all donning balaclavas and masks while armed, fled the scene on foot shortly after the incident.
Currently, no arrests have been made, and authorities are working diligently to identify those involved in the crime.
This incident has sparked renewed concerns regarding the escalating threat from organized ATM bombing gangs operating throughout South Africa. These criminals typically employ advanced planning, military-grade weapons, and explosives, thus endangering both security personnel and local communities.
Police urge anyone with information pertinent to the investigation to step forward.
