The popular Netflix series The Polygamist continues to generate discussions throughout South Africa and beyond, though not all viewers are satisfied. Two of reality TV figure Musa Mseleku’s spouses have shared sharply differing opinions about the show, while Mseleku also weighed in on the comparisons made between himself and the main character, Jonasi Gomora.
Since its debut on Friday, June 12, 2026, The Polygamist has rapidly garnered success on Netflix. Produced by Stained Glass TV, this drama has reached the top of viewing charts in multiple countries and ignited considerable debate online.
Among the voices discussing the series are members of the Mseleku family, known for their own polygamous lifestyle showcased on the reality series Uthando Nes’thembu. MaYeni has once again shared her thoughts on the super novella. Previously, she defended Musa Mseleku against comparisons with the protagonist Jonasi Gomora, but this time, she offered her critique of the series.
MaYeni critiques The Polygamist
MaYeni responded unfavorably to The Polygamist, expressing agreement with Lebo M’s remarks about the title. She stated that although the show is named The Polygamist, Jonasi Gomora’s actions do not constitute true polygamy.
“I don’t like this show. It’s called The Polygamist, but what Jonasi, the character portrayed by Sdumo Mtshali, is doing is not polygamy. I don’t know how I can call it, but it is definitely not polygamy,” MaYeni said.
MaYeni chose to view the series primarily out of curiosity. However, she admitted not being impressed and found it challenging to watch all the way through.
“I didn’t want to watch the show; however, after nearly everyone talked about it, I changed my mind and watched it. And I couldn’t finish watching it. I was annoyed,” she said.
Musa Mseleku addresses Jonasi Gomora comparisons
In contrast, MaCele, Mseleku’s first wife, had a different perspective on the series. She highlighted that it offers valuable lessons for both genders, emphasizing that women should aim to foster a peaceful home environment and minimize ongoing disputes with their spouses.
Musa Mseleku also responded to the comparisons linking his life to that of the series. The businessman and reality star, who has four wives and one fiancée, rejected the notion of a direct comparison between himself and Jonasi Gomora.
“I live a real life. I’m not acting. So, what is happening to a television story cannot be compared to what is really happening to me. I have not even watched the show,” Mseleku said.
