
Cynthia Shange has died
Respected actress and former beauty queen Cynthia Shange has died at the age of 76.
The renowned performer passed away on Monday, 20 April 2026, in a KwaZulu-Natal hospital after battling an illness, as confirmed by her family.
<pHer daughter, Nonhle Thema, took to social media to express her grief, sharing an emotional tribute.
“With a heavy heart, I share the news about our dear mother. Please keep my family in your prayers during this difficult time,” she wrote.
Following the announcement, an outpouring of tributes began, with many reflecting on Shange’s grace and kindness.
A memorial message described her as “a graceful and compassionate soul whose presence brought warmth, dignity, and kindness to all who knew her,” noting that further details about her funeral will be shared soon.
Shange gained recognition in the 1970s as the first Black woman to win the title of Miss Africa South, a significant achievement during the era of racial segregation.
She went on to represent South Africa in the Miss World competition in London in 1972, securing a fifth-place finish.
Her impact was also felt on television, where she built a distinguished career in acting.
Shange became widely recognized for her performance in Udeliwe and later took on the role of Mkabayi in Shaka Zulu.
In her later years, she continued to be a cherished presence on screen, featuring in the show Muvhango, which introduced her talent to a younger audience.
Throughout her impressive career, Shange earned numerous accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Film and Television Awards, as well as recognition from the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, with her family affirming that her legacy will endure through the countless lives she influenced.
