The South African Broadcasting Corporation has announced that the highly regarded drama series Pimville will cease airing on SABC 2.
A public statement confirmed the immediate discontinuation of the series, citing unresolved contractual disputes and alleged violations associated with the production company.
“Following a thorough review process and careful consideration, the SABC regrets to announce that Pimville will be discontinued from tonight, due to unresolved contractual obligations and breaches identified and communicated formally to Bakwena Productions,” the statement read.
This abrupt cancellation follows a period of controversy surrounding the production, particularly regarding claims of unpaid cast and crew members.
While specifics about the alleged violations were not disclosed, the broadcaster confirmed that legal proceedings are in progress.
According to the SABC, a notice of breach was sent to Bakwena Productions in April 2026, with further actions pending based on current contractual and legal discussions.
Despite the cancellation, the broadcaster recognized the hard work of all those who contributed to the show.
“This outcome is deeply regrettable, particularly considering the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the cast, crew, as well as the unwavering support received from audiences, partners, and all stakeholders who contributed to the programme’s success,” the SABC said.
The broadcaster sought to assure the audience that standard procedures were followed during the commissioning of the telenovela.
“The acquisition and commissioning of Pimville followed the Corporation’s standard approval and commissioning processes applicable to its SABC productions,” the statement added.
However, the corporation conceded that some oversight mechanisms were not applied consistently throughout the production, prompting the initiation of internal disciplinary actions.
“As previously communicated publicly by the Corporation, it was subsequently identified that certain approved oversight mechanisms were not implemented consistently and to the required standard. Consequently, an internal consequence management process has been initiated,” the broadcaster explained.
With the removal of Pimville from the programming, the 21:00 timeslot on SABC 2 will be temporarily filled with repeat episodes of Season 2 of Amalanga Awafani.
The SABC also disclosed that discussions with cast and crew representatives regarding the issues raised are ongoing, emphasizing its commitment to addressing the concerns raised while considering the future of the production.
“The Corporation remains committed to stabilising the production environment, ensuring continuity of content, protecting the interests of affected stakeholders, and exploring all appropriate operational options relating to the future of the production,” the statement concluded.
The broadcaster extended an apology to viewers for the interruption in the channel’s schedule amid ongoing uncertainty regarding the future of Pimville.
