Legendary actress Nandi Nyembe dies at 75
South Africa is grieving the loss of renowned actress Nandi Nyembe, an admired figure whose extensive career has significantly influenced both television and theatre.
Nyembe, celebrated for her dynamic roles in shows like Yizo Yizo, Isibaya, Adulting and Soul City, unfortunately passed away at her residence on Saturday, 23 August 2025, at the age of 75.
The family shared the tragic news in a collective statement with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, honoring her as “one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts.”
The statement conveyed: “It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of Mam’ Nandi Nyembe.”
Jabulani Nyembe, her grandson, articulated the family’s devastation while expressing gratitude towards South Africans for their compassion during this difficult period.
A wave of tributes has since emerged on social media, with numerous fans and colleagues referring to her as a titan of the industry, whose legacy will endure.
Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela also relayed the news online, leading to widespread expressions of sorrow throughout the nation.
